Dental Implants Abroad.
Dentaturism - A great treatment alternative to exorbitant UK private dental costs

Written on .

According to Wikipedia, Medical (dental) Tourism refers to people traveling abroad to obtain medical treatment or services.

This can be for a variety of reasons, such as seeking dental treatments that are not available in the patient's home country, receiving less expensive dental care, a recommendation from friends or family or combining dental procedures with a vacation or leisure travel.

Throughout history people have traveled long distances for health care. In ancient Greece, for example, worshippers of Asclepius, the Greco-Roman god of medicine, would make pilgrimages to his temple in Epidaurus, where they would undergo healing through “incubation rituals,” which were rooted in prayer, fasting, and ceremony. Likewise, spas and public baths have long been popular destinations for those seeking medical cures. In the 17th century the emergence of spa towns in appealing settings like the Pyrenees attracted wealthy people from all over Europe. In later centuries, as travel and tourism increased, spas and health resorts in countries worldwide often attracted clientele from overseas.

Why should you considering traveling abroad for dental treatments?

The number of people seeking dental treatment abroad has increased in recent times. The UK Govt ignores reality and keeps pedalling myths. According to BDA (British Dental Association) Great Britain is facing a deep crisis in dentistry, patients are queuing from 4am to see an NHS dentist. BBC recently presented the story of a woman who had to extract 13 teeth because she couldn't find an NHS dentist. Danielle Watts from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk found herself in a "dental desert" - an area where no dentists offer NHS care - and couldn't afford the 💰 thousands of pounds of private treatment needed to fix her teeth.

But aside from saving money, there are several other benefits associated with having dental treatment abroad:

  • Quicker access to dental treatment

First and foremost, patients can receive treatment quickly. Waiting lists for dental treatments appointments can be months in their home country, in contrast, through Dentaturism patients have shorter waiting times and they benefit from complex treatments in a very time-compressed manner, which means that patients can solve their oral health problems sooner. This can be especially important for procedures that are time-sensitive or for patients who are experiencing significant pain or discomfort.

  • Wider range of treatments available

Through the dental tourism programme Dentaturism, patients can benefit from all types of modern dental treatment currently available. These specialists of which we are so proud are closely assisted by a great team of dental technicians who can intervene at any time and decide on the right shape and color for the new prosthetic work, while the patient waits comfortably in the dental chair.

  • Higher quality care

Patients often also receive better quality care abroad. Many countries that are popular for dental tourism, including Romania, have world-class medical facilities that are staffed by highly trained doctors and great professionals. Patients can expect to receive the same level of care they would receive in their home country, if not better. The highest quality of the materials used and the dental centre's state-of-the-art equipment, in accordance with European standards and norms, complement the expertise of our specialists, providing the comfort and safety that all patients seek make Dentaturism one of the best dental tourism services abroad.

  • Combine treatment with a vacation

Seeking dental treatment abroad can be agreat opportunity for patients to combine dental care with a holiday. They will have the opportunity to visit the sights from Cluj-Napoca city area, allowing them to enjoy a vacation while also receiving dental treatment, making the experience of seeking dental care more enjoyable and less stressful.

  • Maintain privacy

Finally, seeking dental treatment abroad can be a way to maintain privacy and confidentiality. Some patients may prefer to keep their dental procedures and treatments private, and seeking dental care abroad can provide an opportunity to do so. At Dentaturism patients can receive treatment without worrying about running into acquaintances or colleagues, which can be a concern in their home country.

Are dental implants treatments a good choice?

quotation marks

First and foremost, I want to say that a tooth is worth more than gold, so if you can save the tooth save it, if it needs a root canal or some type of gum surgery go ahead and do it, that's the best option that you've got right now. Now, if the tooth is completely hopeless and it’s time to take out and your dentist said “You know what, it’s time for this tooth to go”, then dental implant is the best dental treatment that your money can buy.

What most people refer to as a dental implant is a three-piece system starting with:

  • Implant
  • Abutment
  • Crown

So, what is a dental implant?

Titanium dental implants

A dental implant is a screw made of medical grade titanium which makes it very light, very strong and bio compatible, which means that your body and the titanium get along quite well. In fact, allergies to titanium are quite rare.

Which are the best implants?

There are literally hundreds of different implant companies out there so it's important to know which type of implant your dentist is using for your treatment because not all implants are created equally. If I am putting something in my body, I want to make sure that it’s the best product out there for me. There are many high-quality dental implant brands available globally, and the ranking can vary depending on factors such as product quality, cost, and availability in different regions. However, some popular dental implant brands that are widely recognized for their quality and reliability for dental treatments include: Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Dentsply Sirona, Zimmer Biomet, BioHorizons.

  • Straumann implants
  • Straumann is a leading dental implant brand that offers a range of high-quality dental implant systems for various dental implant treatments and procedures. Straumann implants are made from biocompatible materials, such as titanium or ceramic, and are designed to integrate with the patient's natural bone tissue for a secure and long-lasting result. The implants also feature a range of innovative features, such as Roxolid, a proprietary titanium-zirconium alloy that provides superior strength and stability, and SLActive, a surface technology that accelerates osseointegration and reduces healing time. Additionally, Straumann offers a comprehensive range of digital solutions and guided surgery tools to help dentists plan and execute dental implant procedures with precision and ease.

  • Nobel Biocare implant
  • Nobel Biocare is a leading dental implant brand that offers a wide range of high-quality dental implant solutions for different clinical treatments situations. Nobel Biocare implants are designed to provide long-term stability, function, and aesthetics, and are made from biocompatible materials, such as titanium or ceramic, that integrate with the patient's natural bone tissue. Nobel Biocare implants feature several innovative features, such as the TiUnite surface technology, which promotes osseointegration and helps ensure long-term implant success, and the NobelActive implant system, which provides excellent primary stability and enables immediate loading. Nobel Biocare also offers a range of digital solutions, such as the NobelClinician software and the NobelGuide guided surgery system, to help dentists plan and execute implant treatments procedures with precision and efficiency.

All on 4 treatment concept Nobel Biocare
  • All-on-4 is a dental implant treatment concept that involves placing a full set of teeth on four strategically placed dental implants. This treatment approach was pioneered by Dr. Paulo Malo, a renowned Portuguese dentist, and is often performed using Nobel Biocare dental implants. These implants provide excellent primary stability, which is important for the immediate loading of a full set of teeth. Dr. Paulo Malo's All-on-four treatment approach has been widely adopted by dentists around the world due to its high success rates, reduced treatment time, and improved patient outcomes. Nobel Biocare has been a leading provider of dental implant solutions for All-on-4 treatment, and their products are often used in conjunction with Dr. Malo's technique.

Patrik Eriksson (Left), President of Nobel Biocare, presented the trophy to Dr. Paulo Malo (Right)

In January 2023 at a gathering in Nobel Biocare’s Dental Experience Center in Zurich, Switzerland, Nobel Biocare company President, Patrik Eriksson handed over to Dr. Paulo Malo the "Quarter Century Award", honoring the twenty-fifth anniversary of the revolutionary All-on-4 treatment concept.

Okay! But which brand of implant should you choose?

Dentaturism specialists analyze each individual case in detail and each time they draw up a personalized treatment plan, in accordance with the particularities of each patient. The model and brand of implant included in the treatment solution will be the result of these evaluations, and its selection will be based on both the medical and social components.

Because we put the real needs and expectations of patients from all over the world above all else, alongside these two premium implant brands (Straumann and Nobel Biocare) we have decided to include some mid-level brands, specific to local international manufacturers from Germany (Bredent) or France (Biotech Kontact) and last but not least a super economic brand – Stark (Germany), thus covering the whole range of requirements offering adequate solutions for those who put quality first, but also for patients who want a maximum balance of quality - price ratio.

What's implant surgery like?

The procedure itself is simple and straightforward. During the treatment there will be a little bit of water, you're going to feel some vibrations and maybe a little bit of pressure but no discomfort. Through Dentaturism, patients are usually in and out the door clinic in less than an hour.

The typical timeline of a dental implant treatment placement is as follows:

  • First, we have to take the tooth out; once the tooth is out, we wait three months for that bone to heal; there are situations where we can put an implant on the same day that we take the tooth out – this is called an immediate implant. The success rates of immediate implants are quite good if we choose the right cases. But again, it’s not for everyone. Once that bone heals and is solid we can put
  • The implant in and then we wait another three months before
  • We put the final tooth (crown) on there.

The patients often ask me if they can get their tooth on the same day they get their dental implant treatment. There isn't a simple answer to it, but the answer really is – sometimes. Dental implant procedures typically involve a healing period of several months after implant placement, during which the implant fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, before a permanent crown or denture can be placed. Sometimes on a front tooth we can place a tooth on the same day that we place the implant. This procedure is called "Immediate dental implant loading".

The success of this procedure depends on several factors like how your bite is, how your tissues are, how your bone is, so not all people are going to be perfect candidates for this. Proper patient selection, careful planning, and precise surgical techniques are crucial for successful outcomes with immediate dental implant loading.

Immediate dental implant loading

The "Immediate dental implant loading" procedure, also known as "same-day dental implants" or "immediate implant placement with immediate restoration," is a dental treatment in which a dental implant is placed into the jawbone and a temporary crown or denture is attached to the implant on the same day of the implant surgery, without the need for a healing period.

quotation marks

Typically for back teeth we do not like to put the tooth on the same day as the implant just because we know that the risk of failure is higher. The immediate dental implant loading procedure is typically suitable for patients who meet certain criteria, such as having adequate bone volume and density, good oral health, and favorable bite forces. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and other advanced imaging techniques are used to evaluate the bone quality and quantity to determine if immediate loading is feasible. So, unless there are extreme circumstances where the patient really needs this tooth and we are on a really tight timeline and they're willing to take those risks, we don't do it.

Therefore, it's important to note that immediate dental implant loading is not suitable for all patients, and the decision to proceed with this procedure should be made on a case-by-case basis by a qualified dental professional. However, with immediate dental implant loading, the temporary restoration is attached immediately after implant placement, allowing patients to leave the dental office with functional teeth on the same day.

So how do you take care of this implant once you have it?

Does it require no maintenance and you can just kind of chew on it and forget about it or is it something that you need to take care of more? We tell our patients that once they have a dental implant treatment it's going to require a little bit more maintenance than your actual teeth. What this means is you just might have to buy a little extra tool like a water pick and you’re going to want to brush and floss that implant every single day. On top of that you want to make sure that you get x rays every year on it just to make sure that everything is going fine because a lot of the time these implants don't cause any pain. So, if there is something wrong with it you won't really know until it's bad and that's when you're going to start feeling something and by then, it might be too late to try and save that implant. If you catch these things really early, they're really easy to fix.

quotation marks

As a conclusion I want to say don't give up on your teeth unless you absolutely need to. Yes, dental treatments with implants are the best option for replacing missing teeth, but they are not without their problems. Even if you take really good care of your implants, you brush it, you floss it, you still might get some screws loosening or potentially some crowns chipping as you use them more and more and these things really aren't made to last forever. But we do know that at least for fifteen years these implant treatments are quite successful.
