- First, we have to take the tooth out; once the tooth is out, we wait three months for that bone to heal; there are situations where we can put an implant on the same day that we take the tooth out – this is called an immediate implant. The success rates of immediate implants are quite good if we choose the right cases. But again, it’s not for everyone. Once that bone heals and is solid we can put
- The implant in and then we wait another three months before
- We put the final tooth (crown) on there.
The patients often ask me if they can get their tooth on the same day they get their dental implant treatment. There isn't a simple answer to it, but the answer really is – sometimes. Dental implant procedures typically involve a healing period of several months after implant placement, during which the implant fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, before a permanent crown or denture can be placed. Sometimes on a front tooth we can place a tooth on the same day that we place the implant. This procedure is called "Immediate dental implant loading".
The success of this procedure depends on several factors like how your bite is, how your tissues are, how your bone is, so not all people are going to be perfect candidates for this. Proper patient selection, careful planning, and precise surgical techniques are crucial for successful outcomes with immediate dental implant loading.
Immediate dental implants loading
The "Immediate dental implant loading" procedure, also known as "same-day dental implants" or "immediate implant placement with immediate restoration," is a dental treatment in which a dental implant is placed into the jawbone and a temporary crown or denture is attached to the implant on the same day of the implant surgery, without the need for a healing period.
Typically for back teeth we do not like to put the tooth on the same day as the implant just because we know that the risk of failure is higher.
The immediate dental implant loading procedure is typically suitable for patients who meet certain criteria, such as having adequate bone volume and density, good oral health, and favorable bite forces.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and other advanced imaging techniques are used to evaluate the bone quality and quantity to determine if immediate loading is feasible.
So, unless there are extreme circumstances where the patient really needs this tooth and we are on a really tight timeline and they're willing to take those risks, we don't do it.
Therefore, it's important to note that immediate dental implant loading is not suitable for all patients, and the decision to proceed with this procedure should be made on a case-by-case basis by a qualified dental professional.
However, with immediate dental implant loading, the temporary restoration is attached immediately after implant placement, allowing patients to leave the dental office with functional teeth on the same day.
So how do you take care of this implant once you have it?
Does it require no maintenance and you can just kind of chew on it and forget about it or is it something that you need to take care of more?
We tell our patients that once they have a dental implant treatment it's going to require a little bit more maintenance than your actual teeth. What this means is you just might have to buy a little extra tool like a water pick and you’re going to want to brush and floss that implant every single day.
On top of that you want to make sure that you get x rays every year on it just to make sure that everything is going fine because a lot of the time these implants don't cause any pain.
So, if there is something wrong with it you won't really know until it's bad and that's when you're going to start feeling something and by then, it might be too late to try and save that implant. If you catch these things really early, they're really easy to fix.
