Central Park, with a age of over 180 years, is one of the main places of recreation in Cluj-Napoca, being situated on the bank of the Somes Mic river. History of the park began in 1827, when the organization Charity Association of Women (Jóltevő asszony Egyesület) rent the land then desert in order to establish a place of recreation. On May 1 of 1838 established the Commission for town park (Város Sétahely-bizottság) which took over the Association of Women of Charity. The park was opened to the public in early 1830, with the initial Népkert (People's Park).
From September 15th 1860 the park is taken care of by the Park Comission (Sétatéri Bizottság), with the president Count Imre Mikó. In 1862 the Choir of Young Commercial (Kolozsvár Ifjak Kereskedelmi Dalárdája) was founded in Cluj under guidance of Béla Stöger and in the evening they were playing on the lake in park.
On 2 September 1865 was born the Park Association (Sétatér-Egylet) who tooke care of that park, organized alleys, digging a pond and built a pavilion for music. In 1871 Skating Association has rented the lake in the park and in 1877 built a wooden pavilion on the island in the middle.
On 14 June 1874 was opened as part of the park Summer Theater, built by architect Henrik Zimmermann plans. The building is now the Hungarian State Theater. Between 1896-1897 it was built skating pavilion and kiosk, both designed by architect Lajos Pákey. In the park there is a statue of Liviu Rebreanu and George Cosbuc built at the end of 1960.
